10 Principles of True Servanthood

Called to Serve – Living Christ’s Example

In this powerful and heartfelt message, Elder Bates reminds us that the foundation of the Christian life is not status, titles, or recognition—but servanthood. Rooted in John 13:14–15, where Jesus washes His disciples’ feet, the sermon emphasizes that Christ didn’t just teach humility—He demonstrated it.

Jesus, our Lord and Master, performed one of the lowest acts of service to show that true leadership is found in serving others. His example was not symbolic alone; it was a direct command: “Do as I have done.”

Elder Bates outlines ten key principles of servanthood, challenging believers to examine both their hearts and actions:

  • Serving is love, not obligation – It flows naturally from a heart transformed by God.
  • Serving builds relationships, not projects – It’s about people, not accomplishments.
  • Serving puts others first – It requires self-denial and humility.
  • Serving requires sacrifice – It’s not always convenient or comfortable.
  • Serving is stewardship – What God gives us is meant to bless others.
  • Serving is often private – True service seeks no recognition.
  • Serving begins in the heart – Not just in outward actions.
  • Serving honors God, not self – The motive matters.
  • Serving is an opportunity – We must be willing and attentive.
  • Serving is not optional – It is a command for every believer.

The message challenges the idea that leadership is about authority or recognition. Instead, true leadership in God’s kingdom is measured by humility, obedience, and a willingness to serve.

Elder Bates also reminds us that our daily lives are a testimony—often the only “Bible” some people will ever see. Whether at home, work, or in the community, believers are called to reflect Christ through their actions.

The sermon closes with a simple but weighty question:
Are you truly serving—and are you serving Christ’s way?

The call is clear:
Not just to hear the Word, but to live it. Not just to hold a title, but to carry a servant’s heart.
