The Danger of Seeing: A Lesson on Spiritual Discernment

In this powerful message, Pastor Michael D. McDuffie explores the story of King Ahab and the prophet Micaiah (1 Kings 22) to highlight what he calls “the danger of seeing.” The sermon centers on spiritual discernment—being able to perceive what God is revealing—and the responsibility that comes with it.

Seeing Isn’t Just a Gift—It’s a Responsibility

Micaiah had the ability to “see” into the spiritual realm and discern God’s truth, even when 400 false prophets spoke the opposite. His insight wasn’t meant to impress or embarrass others, but to warn, guide, and potentially save lives. Pastor McDuffie emphasizes that spiritual revelation is not for ego—it’s for stewardship.

Truth Feels Negative to the Unrepentant

King Ahab viewed Micaiah as a negative prophet because the truth exposed his wrongdoing. The issue wasn’t the message—it was Ahab’s rebellious heart. When people resist correction, even truth sounds like an attack.

The Risk of Rejecting Revelation

Despite being clearly warned not to go into battle, Ahab ignored Micaiah’s message. This reveals a key principle:
God may show you what’s coming, but your response determines whether it happens.
Spiritual insight can act as a warning system—but only if it’s received and acted upon.

The Cost of Discernment

Micaiah was mocked, struck, and imprisoned for speaking truth. Pastor McDuffie highlights that seeing spiritually can lead to isolation, rejection, and even persecution. Not everyone will accept or appreciate what God reveals through you.

You’re Responsible to Share—Not to Control

A major takeaway is that even when God shows you something and you faithfully share it, you cannot control how others respond. The outcome ultimately rests with God and the individual’s choices.

Heaven and Earth Are Connected

The sermon also underscores a deeper spiritual reality: what happens in the earth often begins in the heavens. Through prayer and discernment, believers can “bind and loose”—either preventing or releasing what has been revealed.

Practice Discernment

Pastor McDuffie encourages believers to actively develop their spiritual sensitivity through prayer. In a complex world, Christians must learn to discern spiritually—not just politically, culturally, or emotionally.

Final Thought

“The danger of seeing” is that revelation comes with weight. It can bring clarity—but also conflict. Still, the goal is not to judge or expose, but to extend grace, warn in love, and help others align with God’s will.
